Police are investigating a vicious online attack against a new Christchurch principal.

Burnside High School principal Warwick Maguire, who took up the job last November, has been targeted by a group called "I Hate Burnside's New Principal!!!" on social networking site Facebook.

Some of the group's 265 members have posted threatening and defamatory comments about Mr Maguire and criticised changes he has made to the school, one of the country's largest, The Press reported today.

Some posts on the group’s wall have come from members trying to encourage students to come to school in mufti to “fire the principal”.

Another member wrote: “The only way to make a real difference is for the whole school to do something big. Like everyone wear mufti for a day or us all having a strike, like everyone sitting out on the field and refusing to go to class.”

Burnside board of trustees chairman Conan Fee says he can't believe the site has been set up.

"I was appalled actually, my first reaction was there was just a lot of very, very misinformed comments on there and people had made some very silly comments," he told RadioLIVE.

Senior Sergeant Pete Stills, of Papanui, said although no official complaint had been received, the school had made police aware of the site, and police were investigating the online comments.

He said the comments could be defamatory, offensive and seen as inciting someone to commit violence. "People need to be very careful about what they say in a public domain.”

Many of the members who comment are complaining about the same things – no mufti for year 13 students, having to stand when Mr Maguire enters a room, a change to timetables and shorter lunch period.

Shocking comments include “someone stab him in the face” and “I swear to god he’s gona be dead 2morro??? [sic]”.

Mr Stills said he wanted to talk to Mr Maguire before deciding what action to take.

Mr Maguire, 54, was on leave and could not be reached for comment yesterday.

He went to Burnside from Wanganui High School, where he had been principal since 1994.

Burnside board of trustees chairman Conan Fee said it was unfair that people could publish unsubstantiated and misinformed comments on the internet. "There is no real way for us to censor that directly."

Internet safety group Netsafe's executive director, Martin Cocker, said teachers and principals were the target of many offensive comments on social networking sites.

you people tht r slandering burnside high are absolute crap heads. just because a group of complete imbeciles posted stupid comments on a facebook page doesnt mean that all of us r like tht. let me tell you why. about 5-6 students posted threatning comments on there. there are 2600 students go to Burnside. hmmmmm not hard to put to and to together is it?? i dont agree with the way they complained about the changes, far from it. what im saying is that you cant judge all BHS students on the actions of a few because its simply not fair. also, you can see that a lot of BHS students DID NOT do anything wrong

I looked at the comments left on the pro-principal facebook page and a lot of it is pretty violent comments from seething wannabe vigilantes who think it would be great to whip the kids. A lot of them use the kia kaha sign off after recommending hitting kids. Nice people out there supporting this guy.

What an interesting concept of maturity and respect Burnside High students have. Y13s who post threatening and defamatory comments on the net in response to their concerns certainly aren't showing maturity or deserving of respect. Warick Maguire is an excellent principal and a good man. He worked wonders for WHS and his employment at Burnside clearly indicates that the BOT of that school felt that changes needed to be made and he was the man to make them. This seems all too clear given the responses of children at this school to changes that seem simple and unrevolutionary to most people. I appreciate that it must be disappointing for Y13 to lose privileges like mufti, but there are ways of dealing with concerns that don't involve Facebook. These children have proven that they need intervention through their actions. As for teachers commenting that Mr Maguire has come in all guns blazing - maybe a little staff professionalism is also lacking at this school.

I too agree with other comments saying that the Facebook group was take too far but, Burnside is a modern school and there are plenty of other traditional schools that one could attend in our area. I can show my respect for my teachers in other ways ! such as my performance in their classes, listening to them when they are speaking and also saying thanks when i exit their clas. He has also comes in "all guns blazing" as one of my teachers said to me, he hasn't even given me the impression that he knows what is wrong with Burnside, he just comes in with his views already decided of what a good school is.I have a feeling that this wont be the end of the topic..... BTW Burnside is a really good school with well higher NCEA Achievement rate than the national average.

This is completely over the top and overly dramatic
there are so many other facebook groups such as i hate miley cyrus, i hate twilight, i hate asia.
you dont see them complaining or the public criticizing for lack of respect
Mr Maguire is so childish as to call the cops and the press simply because some students do not like him. simply UNNECESSARY!!

I am currently a student at Burnside high and I would like to say that not in any way should Mr Maguire receive these horrible threats but I must say that the changes made by him are unnecessary. For example taking away mufti from year 13 students is ridiculous, they are treated like children and should also gain respect and a little freedom. Also making awful sexist comments on the first day back to school it was very unnecessary and he needs to become a bigger person and not to judge others. Also making less powerful persons stand up for him (he should receive some respect) just makes him power hungry and in this day and age we are trying to eliminate these types of people because we all know what ends up happening.....

It's disgusting that the person has made a group like that on Facebook, but I have to say that I personally dislikes the changes the principal has made. Everyone who has attend Burnside for atleast an year is confused about the new timetable etc. There are no troubles for the year 9 students as it's their first year.

the way they are treating mr maguire is unacceptable. i am a student from wanganui high school and he has been a lovely principal and he has done so much for the school. our school is one of the top in this country thanks to what he has done.
standing up in assembaly isnt hard, its a way to show respect to the principal, so what if he makes some changes they have to suck it up and learn that they cant always get what they want. yes i will admit that there are some things i dislike about the rules at high school but i have learnt to live with them, its not like its the end of the world so i dont know why their making such a big deal out of it.
the comments that some students at burnside have made are horrible, wanting him to die? how cruel could someone get. he just wants the school to have clean cut students to have a good reputation. is that so bad?

I've read this story and the comments... and it's not really surprising to see the broad range of comments.

As I went to a UK grammar school - many years ago - it was accepted that when the head teacher walked in the room, you stood to express respect. Saying that children have the right to respect is quite insane - they're right that respect has to be earned... but their principle has already done that by being a successful teacher and principle elsewhere - and the pupils have done what exactly...? Defamation of character, incitement to violence.... are these things worthy of respect?

As far as the music changes go, I'm a musician and I fully believe that music should be a standard part of a curriculum - it never did me any harm and I just wish there's been more of it.

And as for 'mufti'..... we never had that term... it was full school uniform every school day... and we were proud to be identified with an excellent school.

Maybe these children should think about whether they want to be stigmatised for the rest of their lives or whether they want to live their lives to the full... - their choice... and I'm fairly sure they'll take the easy way... because they'll never understand that outside of school - you don't get a second chance!
