I like it, its nice and simple
I stongly agree that the current tax system is not working, there are so many loop holes, & differing levels of fairness with the distribution of benefits. We need a simple system so we know where we stand that is fair and which will empower people to contribute to this economy and thus save all the resources that are being spent on keeping a broken system ticking over. This line of thinking shared by Gareth is very good and we now need those who have been voted into power to stand up and make the tough decisions that are required to be made. You can do it!
Interesting thought, how about this idea, everyone has easier access to money no incentive to work. hmmm one thing I learnt in 3rd form economics more money means increase in demand! hmmm Inflation surely?
This bloke is onto something; he's got my vote!
This Gareth guy is a genius. The idea is almost perfect, admittedly there'll have to be ammendments for the single mother of three under five year olds who can't work because she has to look after the kids, but it's pretty clever nonetheless. It isn't "rich get richer, poor get poorer" either. If you're rich, you're going to own assets, which you'll have to pay tax on, the more assets you own, the more tax, and so is still progressive for the whiney left wing goobers who struggle with the idea that the real world isn't actually fair. Gareth, you're onto it.
Typical right-wing idioligies. Rich get richer, poor get poorer.
Totally agree with Amanda. You could see the frustration from Gareth having to constantly stop mid-explanation. Campbell has to learn that sometimes saying nothing at all is the best interview technique.
I'm a 22 year old software developer from Remuera. I think Gareths idea is completely brilliant!
I watched this specifically to hear the 'whole' story from Gareth. Instead I heard John Campbell constantly interrupting him. Why did he bother having the man on??? He could have just 'talked us through it' as he obviously knows everything there is to know. Terrible interview
The proposal of a Universal Basic Income has been around for many years, Keith Rankin has done a lot of work on it, see http://ubi.wairaka.net/ The Green Party has also promoted a version of it but if Gareth Morgan promotes it it gets coverage! Good on him but it really isn't an original idea. What the critics perhaps don't understand is that each person gets $10,000 so for a couple it would be $20,000 with extra for each child. Savings from getting rid of WINZ would be worth a lot and people would be free to make whatever money they could whenever. The sense of freedom would be incredible. Will any government be brave enough to at least look at it.
