Up with GST down with tax cut, still the same thing. But extra $10 a week from tax cut and compensation, still wont match with the up in GST. What a lot of rubbish from John Key. Dont cover up for huge ammount you make from GST.

In the end," says the Grand Inquisitor in Dostoevsky's parable,
"in the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us,
"Make us your slaves, but feed us.'"

John Key needs to get a little more in touch with reality. At the very top of the interview he talks about people "choosing" what they will do with the extra money they earn, he cites paying of debt, savings etc. Then he uses a wage of $40,000 as an example of a low wage....that's closer to the average wage not a low wage. There are many New Zealand families living on far less. He also states rent is "a couple of hundred dollars" a week. A quick look at the immigration New Zealand site shows that the average rental price for a 3 bedroom house in most of the major centres is well in excess of 300 per week. From recent experience I know it is difficult to find a two bedroom semi-detatched flat in Wellington for under $280 let alone a 3 bdr house. So after paying about $7500 in tax and at least 13,000-16,000 on rent you have less than $20,000 per year. Oh how hard it is "choosing" what to do with that princely sum. After paying for phone, power, insurance (if you can afford it) and other utilities, that sum suddenly becomes closer to $10,000. Then you have to think about school fees, uniforms, transport to school/work, and what else, oh yes food on the table...all for a little under $250 per week and working for families schemes only do so much. Oh and if they get a tax refund of $500 they should "break even" with the rise in gst. So what he says at the top of the interview about people "choosing" what to do with their money refers yet again to the wealthy as there won't be a whole lot of choice for those at the bottom of the payscale. And let's not forget most of these people also don't get to look forward to a payrise or bonus either. Instead our working poor are going to get further and further behind. Owning a home is going to become close to impossible and I honestly don't know how some families will put food on the table.

I like Mr John Keys comment on campbell live, that the government are trying different areas on how to make more Revenue. If revenue is there key objective i cant see people being better off especially on lower incomes where they live from week to week.

Being a victim of the recession with my husband being made redundant a year ago now, putting food on the table is already expensive on the one remaining income we have. I'd like to see some of these politions actually try and feed there families on the budget they expect us to live by. The fact is food like BB Grillers, Sillers, baked beans and the like is so much cheaper, but the nutritional value vertually zero. Now we will pay even more at the supermarket.
