Vodafone talks to Campbell Live about the iPhone price - Video

Tue, 08 Jul 2008 00:00
New Zealanders are less in love with the iPhone it seems. Yesterday, Vodafone teased us with an offer of the iPhone for $199 - but they didn't tell us that to get it for that price, you have to sign up to a $250 per month contract for 24 months. - read full story »

THe same thing happened to me. But i thought i was safe as i had a $40 price cap. However over $1000 later, i found out that daa charges dont add to your bill straight way. Often not for weeks later. So despite checking my bill everyday i wasnt getting accurate info from Vodafone. On top of this i found out that when i had signed up to my contract, vodafone hadnt added the price cap to my account any way. After hanging out for 2 months with my fone cut off trying to get results from vodafone, i paid. I was told that they would wipe it but that never happened, and then they totally insulted me by saying that as they hadnt added the $40 cap they would credit me $40 for their error.

Man what a weasel. Comparing it to broadband by stating it costs a lot to get data down here? What, is data freighted in by ship or something? lmao All he kept talking about was the $50 plan whilst ignoring the fact that the cost of the phone on that plan is extortionate then went on to extol the virtues of the plan whereas the reality is that you get bugger all minutes and data...he was all excited about 250Mb and 1 Gig to download music and movies? 700Mb for one full length movie alone - that's not 'power using' you egg, that's a standard user (if they had the chance)...what a crock - total monopolisation P.s. Get a decent haircut - you look like a toilet brush

What a crock!!!. I' m sick of big companies in New Zealand treating us like we're stupid. Its not hard to figure out they're ripping us off. By they I mean, energy, phone and retail companies. This vodafone rep couldn't hide the fact that he really did agree with John he was just programed to dribble out the same excuse's we hear all the time from these companies.

I'm a Canadian who lives in Auckland; currently in Canada on holiday and just helped my father buy an iPhone 3G, 16Gb. The price differences b/w Rogers (telecom of Canada carrying the iPhone) and Vodafone NZ is polar. My father got a monthly plan of $35 for 200mins of voice with unlimited voice for evenings and weekends. The hoot is that he also go the data package of 6Gb of data a month for $30 - monthly bill of $65 with a $299 purchase price for the phone. I find it hard to even compare 'Apples to Apples' with Vodafone data packages. 1Gb a month for $50 not on a 'iphone plan' or go with the crazy $250 a month plan. Something needs to happen with New Zealand's overall internet infrastructure if we're ever going to have access to proper high speed broadband. Fast, accessible and affordable Internet access is not just the responsibility of Vodafone - it needs to be an important focus of government; like that of roads, healthcare and tourism. The Internet is the economy of the 21st century - if we miss it over the next 2-4 years NZ is in serious shape of dropping off the world map. I was able to surf the net on the iPhone 3G traveling at 100km on a highway 40km outside Ottawa Ontario (while my father drove) like I was sitting in my house in front of a computer. Come on Vodafone and Government, sort it out. Oh, I wasn't just surfing for the fun of it while in the car - I was actually doing research on price comparisons - helping to craft this simple note.

Just saw this video after sister made me aware of price of iPhone in NZ.

I live in Surfers, and have to say I feel sorry for Kiwis getting ripped off that much. Over here, like Campbell said, Telstra offer a much cheaper plan. What Campbell didn't say was Telstra was the most expensive in AU!!
Vodafone AU is a little cheaper and offers more plans.
Optus cheaper again, you can even buy the phone outright for prepay at $749 for 8GB, $849 16GB. You get a good amount of data, credit to use on Txt and Calling and the phone cheaper from all 3 iPhone providers.

If you look at Vodafone NZ's mobile broadband plans, it's $50nz for 1GB, you get a Vodem free on 24month plan. So that $200 is being spread between 600mins of calls and the cost of the device...... Seems pretty steep to me.

I can guarantee that any Kiwi that moves to Aussie will not regret it, you might want to consider it. There is also a huge Kiwi contingency over here so you don't loose your Nationalism!!

To Nicole Tweddell

You are the most diligent stuff form Vodafone NZ I've met, even BS for your company on the media on 10:18pm but do not go to bed.

May your boss rise your wage from tomorrow.

The Vodafone rep. claims that the New Zealand customers already using the iPhone paid $1200.... he needs to do a little more research... i bought mine over 7 months ago and it cost me $650 NZD. Nicole Tweddell has a point, compared to all the electronics and internet plans we have in New Zealand, the prices do make sense. However vodafone is milking the fact that they are the only ones in New Zealand that have the iPhone, i do think the prices are a bit Ridiculous $250 a month IS A LOT OF MONEY!

Why are you just looking at one device/plan when you should look at the whole communications network in NZ, you'll see we're getting ripped off, i.e. the data caps on broadband are they necessary or is it another way to take more money from the people. Are we working with out dated networks in NZ, I know we are on the mobile network it's the reason why texts get lost. Whose to blame? the communications companies? the government?
