I dont know if you will get to read this but I must disagree with you both. True Red, a book written by an ex mongrel mob leader describes how things were as a mobster. From the small abstract that I read of his pretty much makes me understand why a person would want to become a member. Probably of any gang. When you have no dreams. When you have nothing to look forward to in life. When you see this gang doing what ever they want to do. Living how they want to live. Not what society wants them to live but themselves. I guess it can be an attractive lure for weak minded youngsters. Once they become involved, they must face the ugliness that they must become to be part of that gang. A very enlightening view point and something we must work on to prevent from happening often. Seek to guide our future by becoming what we must become for our future.

It's quite pathetic to see how our gangs think we have a connection to afro-american culture when really we aren't linked in anyway at all. Most of them wouldn't have the first clue as to how gangs originated in the US if you asked them. Myself being married to a South African for 8 years, knows that the gangs in Cape Town would make our guys turn white. 48 percent of Cape Town is unemployed and so that renders more of an excuse for criminal activity and poverty. It's a joke really looking at our guys trying to be all hard and sweet as because they've killed or raped someone. But at the same time our Govt and other services have allowed this to become what it has.Because these guys know they can get away with it. No type of severe punishment is dished out to them so year after year innocent lives are forever lost. They say "The youth of this country is where it's at", quite surprising really apart from the fact young people are dying everyday.Just some food for thought....

I think the colour and gang thing adopted from the gangster culture in the USA is sad, Maori culture is beautiful, there is something for everyone to take pride in. I don't understand why when Maori have everything to gain by turning to their own culture that they would throw it all away with such a pathetic thing as colour. To have a life taken over the colour of a T-Shirt is sickeningly sad.
