Family and friends of a 13-year-old who died after jumping off a bridge into
the Waikato River held a vigil for the boy on Monday night.
Zharian Watkins went missing after he jumped off the 10m-high Tainui Bridge
at Huntly on Friday.
Following an extensive search by police, including a dive squad, and up to 50
local residents, Zharian's body was found in the river next to the information
office by members of the public about 3pm on Monday.
Friends and family gathered on the river bank about 7pm on Monday to remember
Zharian, Fairfax reported.
A spokeswoman for the family told Fairfax they are glad Zharian's body had
been recovered quickly.
"We are extremely happy it hasn't dragged (on)."
Zharian jumped off the bridge and landed on a 14-year-old friend, who had
jumped just before him.
His death has been reported to the coroner.
