The events on the Central Plateau late last night are yet another reminder of our rather perilous existence - the natural world really does hold all the cards.
No doubt many in Christchurch feel great sympathy towards those in Tongariro and beyond, and not just because of the volcanic activity - if you have sustained damage as a result of the volcanic eruption then you will have to lodge a claim with the Earthquake Commission (EQC).
Good luck with that, say the people of Christchurch.
As we've reported on recently, nearly two years on from the September 4 earthquake many are still struggling with simply getting what they are entitled to from EQC and their insurance companies.
