A US World War II bomber has crashed in flames in a cornfield near Chicago.

But all seven people on board the B-17 escaped uninjured.

The vintage plane called a "flying fortress" for its many gun turrets, caught fire in midair.

Passengers praised the pilot for landing between a tower and a line of trees, before the wreck was engulfed in flames.

Built in 1944, it was christened Liberty Belle and was used to publicise the heroism of Second World War aircrew.
