A man on trial for attacking the Waihopai spy base has told Wellington District Court how he and two fellow activists planned and executed their mission.

Adrian Leason is accused with Peter Murnane and Sam Land of slashing the inflatable dome covering the satellite dishes and cutting fences around the Marlborough facility operated by the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB).

Leason told how images from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the effects of protest actions by the Christian pacifist Ploughshares group influenced his decision to attack the base.

After several protests outside the facility and thorough reconnaissance of the perimeter fence the group launched their attack early on April 30 last year.

Leason said he was surprised they were able to cut through the electric fences without setting off any alarms or getting electrocuted.

He said that on penetrating the base's defences the men reached one of the domes, and, placing their hands on its plastic surface, said "we disarm you in the name of Jesus Christ".

Using sickles they then slashed the dome's outer covering.

"We weren't there to smash it up," Leason said.

The trial is continuing.

Now pay the repair costs with out complaining, and if you still feel the same, vandalise at will, providing always that you will be responsible for your actions, and your wallet can stand the pressure.

Funny, you hear from the religious people amongst us that god knows everything about everyone, what you do, say and think. Sounds as if the big fella upstairs, is running a spy base of his own.... but I guess that's ok by these religious fanatics.

Are they on trial for Criminal Damage? or defended hearing for Wilful Damage? Can't be on trial for Wilful Damage as it can only be heard in front of a Judge (purely summarily)

Yet another day! The legal farternity is really coming to grips with wilful damage. Anyone can now argue the most ridiculous and still be heard for days and days on end.
It really gives the law abiding citizen food for thought - how they can commit crime and be encouraged to go and do some more, with intent listening by the legal eagles to find justification somehow. It keeps them fat and happy.

Preacher:
Funny about the Christian Right's selective morality on this matter, especially given the murders and firebombings committed by antiabortion terrorists in the United States.

At least these Catholics acted to try to prevent the use of surveillance data to unseat democratically elected governments and impose murderous dictatorships.

These idiots have done nothing more than give the rest of us a bad name. We are called on to obey the authorities, not vandalise private property.
