Adrian Leason (L), Pete Murnane (C) and Samuel Land (R) were found not guilty of the charges facing them over the Waihopai spy base 'popping'

One of the Waihopai dome-busters cleared of burglary and wilful damage believes their trial has been pivotal to New Zealand's history.

Adrian Leason, Peter Murnane and Sam Land admitted breaking in to the US spy base in Marlborough almost two years ago and slashing a satellite cover – but insisted they were saving lives around the world by doing so.

They were yesterday found not guilty of all nine charges against them at Wellington District Court.

Mr Land, who is the youngest of the trio at 26, says the case has provided an important lesson for all New Zealanders.

“For us it’s been the chance to get the message out there to everyday New Zealanders about what goes on; on our soil and we’re just privileged to have the opportunity to be able to tell that story – and it’s a landmark in New Zealand history,” he says.

Sam Land says he doesn't intend a repeat performance but intends to be at the annual Waihopai protest again, next January.

New Zealand law contains so much bulls*t, that is why law students have to wade through so much rubbish in their studies, common sense & logic is often pushed aside for so much rediculous mumbo jumbo in the name of the law....that's why 3 idiots walked away free after damaging the waihopai spy base to the tune of around one millions dollars.

Somebody else will do it next year, and the jury will have to let them off too. The precedent is set - it is legal to commit burglary and cause wilful damage to any property from now on in. One cannot let these three off and incarcerate others. We will all become criminals from now on, because it is much much easier than being a hard working, law abiding, tax paying citizen. It does not matter if you do it to redistribute wealth, saving the lives of others in doing so. But who will still be producing? The legal farternity will be the only other profession left other than criminals.

Cases like this should not be left to the jury.

If as suspected the Waihopai installation is part of the Echelon system these 3 people should have been shot as soon as they got through the fence. Echelon has helped to stop nuclear wars, find terrorists and major drug dealers and protect the citizens of this country and others from harm. It is not the Kiwi way - say the protesters - so what is the Kiwi way? Lie on your back and invite rape from the rest of the world?. Prior knowledge from systems like Echelon and Waihopai help Governments to put in place systems and responses that stop problems before they start. Celebrate Waihopai and its part in keeping the world safe -do not destroy it or close it down. These three idiots have had their 3 minutes of fame - i hope they descend back into total obscurity - next time shoot the buggers.

Good call Barney, these guys are pathetic. How they were found not guilty of blatant wilful damage they admitted is beyond me. What is wrong with the jurors?

A great day for anarchy but not New Zealand you bunch of tossers. If I had my way I would chain the three of you to the Waihopai fence permanently. Why don't you go and live somewhere else you are unfit to call yourselves Kiwis.
