A house fire in the Waikato has claimed a man's life and police are investigating whether anyone else was caught in the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the fire at the single-storey house in School Road, Netherton, about 10km north west of Paeroa, just before 5am on Thursday and told there were two people missing.

A body, believed to be of a man, was found in the ruins after the fire was controlled.

"It is not known if anyone else was inside the dwelling at the time of the fire and this will be a focus of our investigations," said Sergeant Dave Litton of Waihi police.

It was too early to determine if the cause of fire was suspicious.

Police and Fire Service investigators will work to determine the cause of the fire later in the morning.
