A Waikato man who sent a woman 1600 text messages demanding sex has been found guilty of blackmail, rape and threatening to kill.
A jury returned the verdict against James Leonard Williams, 33, following a two-day trial in the High Court at Hamilton, the Waikato Times reported.
Williams sent the victim hundreds of text messages in December last year saying he required two or three "sex sessions" or he would send intimate pictures of her to her family and her employer.
"You better let me have my way good and proper," one of the tamer of the 1600 text messages said.
Crown prosecutor Rebecca Guthrie said the pressure became too great and on Christmas Day she finally gave in to his demands.
"When she did have sex with him, it was because it was the only option she could see to placate him."
However, the texts continued into the New Year.
Williams was found guilty of two counts of blackmail and one of rape. He was also found guilty of threatening to kill after the victim received a death threat, as well as threats of rape, violence and car bombing, from another, unknown number.
He is in custody and will be sentenced in March.
Rape Prevention Education Whakatu Mauri executive director Kim McGregor told the paper such cases were growing in conjunction with the use of technology and social networking.
She said women should not be forced into changing their behaviour, and can help themselves by refusing to pose for intimate photographs.
"We have to be shifting the responsibility from the shoulders of young women and on to the men who perpetrate violence against them."
