Wallabies captain James Horwill will undergo surgery today on an injured hamstring and is unlikely to play again this year.
Horwill ruptured his right hamstring in a Super 15 match between the Reds and Brumbies three weeks ago. The Australian Rugby Union said that after consulting specialists on Monday, the giant lock had been booked in for an operation in Sydney.
While Horwill has said he is hopeful of returning in time for the Wallabies' tour to Europe in November, that now seems unlikely. His unavailability might cause 34-year-old lock Nathan Sharpe to postpone his international retirement while Australia lacks depth and experience in the second row.
