A Wanganui toddler's mother will appear in court today, charged over the death of her son whose father is behind bars for killing two year-old Jhia Te Tua.

Thirty year-old Lilah McGregor is charged with assaulting Karl Perigo-Check and perverting the course of justice.

Her boyfriend, 22-year-old Rikki Ngatai-Check, is charged with the toddler's murder.

The boy died after being admitted to Wanganui Hospital in a critical condition in October.

His father, Wanganui gang member Karl Check, is serving at least 15 years for the 2007 murder of Jhia Te Tua who was shot as she slept on a couch in a drive-by shooting.
