The Warriors could be on the verge of their biggest upset – beating the All Blacks.
Less than a month before public voting closes for New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment of 2011 at this year’s Halberg Awards, the Warriors are on the brink of wrestling the honour away from the World Cup winning AB’s.
The Sunday Star-Times understands that as of Friday, Warriors second-rower Lewis Brown’s match-winning try against the Melbourne had pulled away from the second-place All Blacks, with the ANBL champion Breakers coming in third.
There are six finalists vying for the title, with the Breakers, All Blacks, and Warriors competing against shot put queen Valerie Adams, rowing duo Hamish Bond and Eric Murray, and Doug Bracewell’s heroics with the ball against Australia in Hobart.
Halberg Award organisers are expected to confirm the Warriors’ lead next week.
This year’s award dinner has sold out. The public have till high noon on February 9 to vote for their favourite sporting moment.
