why would somebody even do such a thing...if the guy accidentally recorded it, why did he give it to the media...?

I no longer watch tv news or Campbell Live as the subject of the 'teapot tape' is trivial and will have no bearing on how I vote. Policy is what I vote on, not some media beatup. Simple - it is illegal to have made the tape. Suck it up media and move on, there are more important issues to be reported. Oh, that's right, these days it is all about tabloid journalism.

Gotta luv the hypocrisy of Key. He was a big advocate of ramming through covert survellence powers for the NZ Police but squeals when the tables are turned on him. Hats off to the NZ media for running with this. No matter what the Nationalites on here say this is news. It could be a possible incident of electoral colusion. How is that not in the public interest? By the way it was not a private conversation. It was an election PR stunt. Thats not private.

What is it with focusing on these small irrelevant issues, who cares about a private conversation when we should be caring about the real issues and the policies that will determine how our country is run? This is low level journalism, and all this attention is over nothing. Give us some real news about the policies and real election material, not about a bloody cup of tea!

Talk about a proverbial storm in a teacup- the only reason the storm continues is because of waves being kicked up by the media. Please, please can we move on?

Unless invited to join, the conversation should damned well have remained confidential and private. Keys was correct to to seek police assistance. An offense has been committed.

Like most events these days, once the media gets hold of any information it gets blown out of proportion. The question was the tea party private, yes it should have been, but again media is making it in to something that it does not need to be. Its not news and it should be left alone - media stop the stirring

Just to reinforce the point Eric made, in fact the wealthiest 18% pay more than 95% of New Zealand's tax take. So all you bleeding heart socialist had better be careful... without us 'Capitalist Pigs' you might have to work for a living. Maybe some of you will morph into 'Capitalist Pigs' too once this happens. But some fact about JK's illegally recorded conversation; 1... The conversation was private and the media understood that since they were asked to remove themselves and did so. 2... It is illegal to record a private conversation without the knowledge of both parties, since neither party were aware they were being recorded this recording has been illegally obtained. These are undisputed facts. Finally, the journalist/cameraman who did the recording claims it was mistakenly recorded... maybe it was... my answer YEAH RIGHT. Whether the public have a right to know or not is purely subjective and depends on who you are and your political affiliations... personally, in my opinion, the notion that this is in the public interest is garbage.

I doubt the very public conversation involved more than idle chit-chat about who cooks the best roast. Neither guy is so silly as to discuss anything controversial. Media need to go back to school to learn when they have been suckered.

It is quite clear that the Keys-Banks conversation was a public conversation in a public place on a matter of public interest with the media being unlawfully evicted from a public place that they were lawfully entitled to occupy. It is also evident that the recording came about as a result of the recording equipment that was used to record the interviews being overlooked and left behind during the unlawful eviction of journalists from the cafe. Accordingly given these facts and the fact that The Herald on Sunday sought John Keys consent to publish it is quite clear that no offence has been committed. It is equally clear that John Keys contentions that the recording was deliberate and that The Herald on Sunday was enagaging in "News of the World Tactics" are nothing short of defamatory aspersions about the Herald on Sunday and the journalistic integrity of its staff. Accordingly in order to put an end to these aspersions the Herald on Sunday needs to ask John Key for a complete and unreserved public rettraction of the defamatory aspersions he has made about them. Come on John Keys the real reason you have not agreed to the publication of the details of the conversation is because it contains matters that you wish to hide from the voters of Epsom as well as the voters of NEW Zealand.
