Hua Zui Ba has accomplished what few female panda bears have managed to do in Europe.
One hundred and thirty five days after being artificially inseminated, she has given birth to two panda cubs.
Weighing at about 150 grams each, the cubs are the first of their species to be born in Spain since 1982 and only the third litter to be born in Europe, Spanish agency EFE reported.
Pandas are in danger of extinction and have great difficulty breeding. Hua Zui Ba was artificially inseminated twice before successfully reproducing. The father Bing Xing was given to Spain by the Chinese government in 2007.
Hua Zui Ba gave birth with no complications, zoo officials said, but the cubs will spend some time in an incubator.
In the meantime visitors to Madrid´s Zoo will be able to see the new additions on TV screens set up at the zoo.
