A Porirua woman is warning others not to buy a water filter system which was sold to her by a door-to-door salesman.
She says he told her Porirua's water comes from recycled sewage water, and it's not the first time the company has been accused of lying.
Hinemoana Brown purchased the water filter system after being told by a sales representative from the Australian company Love Springs that tap water in Porirua wasn't safe to drink.
"I was told that it had come from the sewage plant," says Ms Brown.
The water in Porirua is supplied by the Greater Wellington Regional Council. It comes from the Kaitoke weir, not the sewer.
Ms Brown made an initial payment of $29.95 and was told she'd have to continue weekly payments of $15 until a total of $1500 was paid off.
Once Ms Brown discovered she'd been lied to, she stopped the payments. Now she's been told she owes $150 to break her contract. She says she's been ripped off.
"They said that because the water was, they pretty much said it was dodgy with all the particles that was in it. They said that it wasn't good for you."
Myor Jenny Brash is outraged false claims were made about the city's water supply. She's warning others not to buy the filter system, and has also written a letter to the company, and says if she doesn't get a satisfactory response she'll go to the police.
"We can be very proud of the quality of our tap water, and for these untruths to be told is absolutely shocking," says Ms Brash.
3 News visited Love Springs' head office in Auckland. We were told that anything said during the sale of a filter was the problem of the individual contractor who sold it.
We were then told the only person allowed to speak with reporters was out of the country.
The Commerce Commission says it has received several complaints about claims made by Love Springs sales reps, and they don't include Ms Brown's concerns or complaints made in Australia.
Love Springs was fined $20,000 last year for breaching the Queensland Fair Trading Act. Residents in Ipswich were told they could develop cancer from drinking unfiltered water.
Back here the Commerce Commission is deciding if Love Springs has breached our Fair Trading Act too.
