Well, New Zealand’s launched the seventh Rugby World Cup, with an expected win over Tonga at Eden Park.

The game followed a spectacular 20-minute opening ceremony in front of about 60,000 fans.

But transport chaos and big problems in downtown Auckland marred what was supposed to be a day of celebration for the whole country.

Amanda Gillies has the report and Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully is in the studio on The Nation.

McCully stated that he had faith in the transport system to cope..http://www.3news.co.nz/RWC-wont-break-down-Aucklands-transport---McCully/tabid/423/articleID/225148/Default.aspx.. this implies that he was very hands on had reviewed all the arrangements and signed off on them..that makes it entirely his fault. Unless he was just guessing? i actually think its the latter.

When will politicians learn that getting everybody to "talk" together does not achieve anything! Someone actually needs their behinds kicked into doing something. As for Veolia, how is it possible that people can be stranded in a train for more than an hour without any communication whatsoever? What were they thinking?

An hour and half stuck on a train with no communication is a management failure, no excuses. McCully and Brown need to say it wasn't acceptable and they are going to fix it quickly. McCully's ramblings about all the things that worked and Brown's statement that "we are victims of our success" demonstrates a complete lack of empathy and accountability. Get your act together fast.

I shudder to think what our overseas visitors think of our Mickey Mouse transport system and the poor organisation in Auckland city on opening night. We are extremely lucky there wern't any major tragedies as it could have gone pear shaped very quickly. The opening ceremonies and fireworks were awesome! Big ups to those organisers!

Its not McCully we should be angry at, after all he's only the RWC minister. Steven Joyce, our Transport Minister, is the one who should be answering to the public. For years he has shot down public transport proposals such as the city rail loop in favour of more motorways and roads of national significance. You just have to look at the budgeting this year to see his stupidity, 80% for roading and motorway construction and something like 13% for public transit.

Am I missing something here? Trains are designed to stop quickly when the EMERGENCY STOP button is activated. Get a life you idiots that caused that problem; don't blame the transport provider. Not only does the train stop BUT they are not allowed to proceed until the cause is ascertained as it could have been a GENUINE incident.

Murray McCully is noted for interferring in the operational detail of RWC organisation. It would not surprise me if McCully insisted upon approving the various bus and train timetables and wthe buses and carriages to be used. When things go wrong, he then has a tendency to blame others.

That was me the bald headed guy in the story. Mr McCully, you owe me and ever other person an apology. You want to know where your system fell apart then how about asking us first?

considering they knew there were going to be much more people than could fit in the areas, you'd think they would have had backup plans. BUT IT WAS STILL AWESOME :D
