URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Westland
PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN FOR THE RANGES OF WESTLAND DURING TUESDAY,
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.
Fronts embedded in a moist northwesterly flow are expected to bring
periods of heavy rain to the west of the South Island today and on
Wednesday. On Thursday another front is expected to move northeast
over the South Island bringing a further burst of heavy rain to the
west. The largest accumulations are expected for the ranges of
Westland south of Otira where a total of 250 to 350mm could
accumulate from Tuesday morning to Thursday evening.
This amount of rain may cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly and
localised surface flooding.

HEAVY RAIN WARNING
AREA/S AFFECTED: THE RANGES OF WESTLAND SOUTH OF OTIRA
Rain is expected to become heavy about the ranges this afternoon but
ease Wednesday morning. In the 18 hours from noon Tuesday to 6am
Wednesday expect 100 to 150mm of rain to accumulate with the largest
amounts about higher parts of the Alps. Peak intensities of 10 to
15mm per hour.
Another burst of heavy rain is expected from Wednesday evening to
Thursday evening. In the 24 hours from 6pm Wednesday to 6pm Thursday
a further 150 to 200mm of rain may accumulate. Peak intensities 15 to
25mm per hour during Thursday afternoon.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 3500 metres.

Northland to Waitomo, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Cloudy periods. Isolated showers, becoming confined to Northland and Coromandel this evening.
Taranaki to Wellington, including the central high country, Wairarapa, Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds: Often cloudy. Scattered rain, retreating to Wairarapa and the central high country tomorrow morning.
Remainder of Marlborough: High cloud. A few spots of rain clearing tonight.
Buller, Westland and Fiordland: Rain in Buller and Westland, with some heavy falls, spreading south this afternoon.
Canterbury: Fine with high cloud. Warm tomorrow afternoon.
Otago and Southland: High cloud thickening bringing scattered rain this evening, then clearing overnight. Mainly fine and warm tomorrow, but the chance of an afternoon shower.
Chatham Islands: Fine apart from morning and evening cloud.
Thursday: North Island, cloudy periods and a few showers in the west. South Island, rain with heavy falls in the west, easing to showers from the south. A brief period of rain spreading northwards in the east.
Friday: North Island, rain or showers with most places. South Island, few showers in the south and west. Early showers in the east then fine.
Saturday: North Island, rain or showers with most places. South Island, rain or showers in the south and west. Rain spreading north in the east.
Chatham Islands: Cloudy periods with the odd shower and strong or gale northerlies on Thursday. On Friday, periods of rain with gale northwesterlies dying out. Rain or showers with westerlies on Saturday.
