URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Otago, Southland, Taihape, Hawkes
Bay, Taupo

HEAVY SNOW FOR SOUTHERN FIORDLAND, SOUTHLAND, AND CLUTHA TODAY, THEN
ABOUT THE HAWKES BAY RANGES AND CENTRAL PLATEAU TONIGHT.
A bitterly cold southerly flow over the lower South Island is
expected to spread northwards today (Tuesday) and Wednesday. Snow
showers are expected to sea level about southern Fiordland, Southland
and Clutha, where 20 to 30cm may accumulate above 300 metres about
southern Fiordland, the western ranges of Southland and the Catlins.
In addition, snow is expected to lower to 500 metres about the
central North Island overnight tonight, and to 300 metres further
south. These wintry showers are expected to affect the lower and
central North Island through Wednesday and much of Thursday, with
snow likely to affect many higher roads. The most significant
snowfall is expected about the central plateau and Hawkes Bay Ranges
tonight and Wednesday morning where 20 to 30cm is expected above 700
metres about the main range.
People are advised that there could be disruption to transport,
especially about higher roads and that vulnerable stock could be at
risk, especially with significant wind chill.

FORECAST:
Snow showers are expected to ease this evening (Tuesday). In the 12
hours between 9am and 9pm Tuesday, expect 20 to 30cm above 300
metres, with 5 to 10cm to 100 metres. Note, snow showers are likely
to continue through Wednesday and Thursday, although the snow level
should gradually rise.
AREA/S AFFECTED: THE CENTRAL NORTH ISLAND RANGES FROM THE RUAHINE TO
THE HUIARAU RANGE, INCLUDING THE CENTRAL PLATEAU AND TONGARIRO
NATIONAL PARK
FORECAST:
Rain is expected to turn to snow above 500 metres overnight tonight,
lowering to 300 or 400 metres about eastern parts (Hawkes Bay side of
the ranges) during Wednesday. In the 12 hours from midnight tonight
through to midday Wednesday expect 20 to 30cm to accumulate about the
main range above 700 metres, with 5 to 15cm to 500 metres and about
the central plateau and Tongariro.

Northland to Waitomo, including Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo: Periods of rain, some heavy, with squally thunderstorms and hail, easing to showers tomorrow and clearing in Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo.
Central high country, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Rain, heavy at times, with snow lowering to 500 metres overnight. Rain gradually easing to a few showers tomorrow.
Taranaki to Wellington, also Wairarapa: Rain today. Showers tomorrow, with hail and snow to 300 to 400 metres.
Marlborough, Nelson and Buller: Scattered rain clearing today. Mainly fine tomorrow, apart from sleety showers about the Marlborough coast.
Canterbury: Sleet or snow showers, especially from this evening and about North and Mid Canterbury.
Westland and Central Otago: Fine.
Remainder of Otago, Southland and Fiordland: Showers, with snow to near sea level, lifting above 300 metres tomorrow.
Chatham Islands: Showers.

Friday: North Island, scattered showers in Northland, mainly fine from Auckland to Bay of Plenty and North Taranaki, showers elsewhere becoming less frequent and snow lifting to 500 metres. South Island, becoming fine in most places, but still a few showers over Banks Peninsula, frosty inland.
Saturday: North Island, fine or becoming in most places, with morning frosts, but still a few showers in Gisborne and coastal Hawkes Bay. South Island, fine with morning frosts.
Chatham Islands: Sleety showers and strong cold southerlies on Thursday and Friday. Wind and showers both easing on Saturday.
