URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Wairarapa, Wellington, Manawatu

PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN ABOUT THE TARARUA RANGE TUESDAY
A complex trough of low pressure is expected to move slowly east over
the South Island and lower North Island during the next couple of
days. Bands of heavy rain and showers are expected to affect most
western areas from today (Monday) through to Wednesday morning. The
heaviest falls are expected about the Tararua Range during Tuesday,
with 100 to 130mm expected to accumulate over the 24 hour period.
People are advised that heavy rain about the range is likely to cause
rivers and streams to rise rapidly.

FORECAST:
Periods of heavy rain are expected about the range during Tuesday. In
the 24 hours from 1am Tuesday to 1am Wednesday expect 100 to 130mm to
accumulate. Peak intensities 10 to 15mm/hr during early Tuesday
morning, then again during the late afternoon and evening.

Northland to Taranaki, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and the central high country: Occasional showers, turning to rain for a time tomorrow morning, briefly heavy.
Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa : Fine today. Rain tomorrow, mainly about the ranges, with heavy falls about the Tararua Range.
Wanganui to Wellington: Isolated showers, mainly about the ranges. Rain overnight, followed by showers, some heavy.
Buller to Fiordland: Rain with heavy falls, thundery south of Westport, easing from the south tomorrow.
Nelson, Marlborough: Rain developing tonight, becoming confined to the Nelson ranges overnight, with brief rain elsewhere tomorrow afternoon and evening.
Canterbury to Southland: Scattered rain spreading north this afternoon. A few showers tomorrow, some heavy north of Oamaru in the afternoon.
Chatham Islands: Fine spells. Rain from midday tomorrow, easing to showers at night.

Wednesday: Fine about Gisborne Hawkes Bay and the fiords. Scattered showers elsewhere gradually clearing and fine breaks increasing.
Thursday: Rain spreading from the west, heavy from Fiordland to Buller. Only a few showers in the east and also from Bay of Plenty to Northland.
Friday: Rain or showers, heavy in the west of the South Island,but little if any reaching eastern areas. Southerlies moving onto the far south in the evening with snow lowering to 500 metres.
Chatham Islands: Showers on Wednesday with southerlies gradually developing, clearing Thursday with northeasterlies developing.Rain developing on Friday with strong northerlies.
