URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Westland, Otago, Canterbury

BURST OF HEAVY RAIN FOR WESTLAND AND THE ALPS THURSDAY TO FRIDAY,
WITH NORTHWEST GALES ABOUT INLAND CANTERBURY.
A complex trough is expected to move east over the country during
Thursday, Friday and early Saturday. This trough is expected to bring
rain to western areas, with the heaviest falls expected about the
South Westland Ranges and the Otago and Canterbury Headwaters. In
these areas 80 to 120mm is likely to accumulate over a 15 to 18 hour
period, with 150 to 200mm about higher parts of the Alps.
Heavy rain is likely to cause rivers and streams to rise, and make
driving hazardous.
In addition, northwest gales about inland parts of the South Island
are expected to rise to severe gale about inland Canterbury, gusting
130km/h in exposed places.
Winds of this strength can bring down trees and powerlines, and make
driving hazardous for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

FORECAST:
Heavy rain is expected from Thursday afternoon, clearing Friday
morning. In the 18 hours from 2pm Thursday until 8am Friday expect 80
to 120mm to accumulate, with 150 to 200mm about higher parts of the
Alps. Peak intensities 20 to 30mm per hour Thursday night and early
Friday morning with thunderstorms possible. Note: 50 to 70mm is
likely near the coast during the same period.
FREEZING LEVEL: 1600 metres, lowering to 1400 metres in heavy rain.
AREA/S AFFECTED: THE OTAGO AND CANTERBURY HEADWATERS
FORECAST:
A period of heavy rain is expected from Thursday afternoon to early
Friday. In the 15 hours from midday Thursday about Otago, but 3pm
Thursday about Canterbury, expect 80 to 120mm to accumulate within
20km of the divide, but 150 to 200mm about the divide between Lake
Ohau and Arthurs Pass. Peak intensities 20 to 30mm per hour about the
divide Thursday night and early Friday morning with thunderstorms
possible.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 1800 metres, lowering to 1600 metres in heavy
rain.

FORECAST:
Northwesterlies are expected to rise to gale late Thursday afternoon,
then to severe gale Thursday night, gusting 130km/h in exposed

to ease Friday morning.

From Northland to Manawatu, including Bay of Plenty and the central high country: Fine spells and a few showers in the west today. Mainly fine tomorrow apart from the odd shower in Taranaki.
Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa: Mostly fine, but a few showers possible south of Napier until tomorrow morning.
