HEAVY RAIN FOR WESTLAND AND THE TARARUA RANGE. SEVERE NORTHWEST GALES
FOR CANTERBURY, MARLBOROUGH, WELLINGTON AND WAIRARAPA.
A very active front, preceded by an unusually strong and moist north
to northwest flow, will cross the South Island today (Friday), then
weaken over the lower North Island tonight.
Heavy rain in Westland is expected to ease later this afternoon, but
another 100 to 150mm could accumulate about the ranges. For the
Tararua Range, 70 to 100mm could accumulate this evening and Saturday

are urged to exercise extreme caution. Rivers and streams are likely
to continue rising, and there could be surface flooding. Also, winds
of this strength can topple trees, powerlines and irrigation systems,
and can make driving extremely hazardous, especially for motorcycles
and high-sided vehicles.
Note, heavy rain in Fiordland and about the Otago Headwaters has
eased, and severe northwest gales about the Fiordland, Southland and
Otago have also eased and the warning for these areas is lifted.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to ease this afternoon. In the
7 hours from 9am to 4pm Friday, expect another 100 to 150mm to
accumulate about the ranges, on top of what has already fallen. Peak
intensities of 30mm per hour or more until early afternoon.
FREEZING LEVEL: 3600 metres lowering to 3000 metres Friday afternoon.
AREA/S AFFECTED: HEADWATERS OF THE CANTERBURY LAKES AND RIVERS
Heavy rain is expected to ease from the south this afternoon. In the
7 hours between 9am and 4pm Friday, expect another 100 to 150mm near
the main divide, with 40 to 80mm within 20km east of the divide from
the Rakaia River northwards, but 30 to 40mm further south. This rain
is expected on top of what has already fallen. Peak intensities of
25mm per hour or more near the divide until early afternoon, and
thunderstorms are also possible.
FREEZING LEVEL: Lowering to 3200 metres this afternoon.
AREA/S AFFECTED: THE TARARUA RANGE
Rain is expected to become heavy later this afternoon (Friday). In
the 12 hours between 6pm Friday and 6am Saturday, expect 70 to 100mm
to accumulate. Peak intensities of aroudn 15mm per hour overnight.

Northland south to Taranaki, Taihape, Taupo and Bay of Plenty: Rain in west spreading elsewhere overnight, with localised heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, easing from the south later tomorrow.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Fine apart from a period of rain tomorrow.
Wanganui to Wellington, also Wairarapa (including the Tararua District), Nelson and Marlborough: Rain, clearing tomorrow morning and becoming mainly fine. Severe northwest gales about Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa easing this evening.
Canterbury: Mainly fine, but brief evening showers tomorrow.
Buller: A few showers.
Westland and Fiordland: Showers, turning to rain for a time tomorrow.
Otago and Southland: Scattered showers, some possibly heavy with hail along the coast.
