URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Northland

PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN FOR NORTHLAND THIS WEEKEND.
A broad area of low pressure lies just north of New Zealand. A front
associated with this low pressure system, is expected to approach
Northland on Saturday, then move slowly south on Sunday. Strong to
gale northeasterlies precede this front, with periods of heavy rain
about northern and eastern parts of Northland during the weekend. The
more persistent heavy falls are expected from Saturday evening
through to Sunday evening, when 120 to 150mm is likely to accumulate
over a 30 hour period. People are advised that heavy rain can cause
rivers to rise rapidly, with surface flooding possible in low lying
areas.

Rain is expected to become more persistent and heavier Saturday
evening. In the 27 hours from 6pm Saturday to 9pm Sunday expect 120
to 150mm to accumulate about northern and eastern parts of Northland.
Peak intensities 10 to 20mm/hr Sunday morning and afternoon.

Northland: Periods of rain with some heavy falls. Gale easterlies, gusting 110 km/h in exposed places.
Auckland and Coromandel: Occasional light showers, turning to rain late morning. Strong easterlies, gusting 90 km/h in exposed places.
Bay of Plenty: Mostly cloudy, with a few showers west of Whakatane.
Western and central areas from Waikato down to Wellington: Mainly fine. High cloud north of Mt Ruapehu.
Gisborne to Wairarapa: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers.
Marlborough and Canterbury: Mostly cloudy, with patchy drizzle north of Rakaia at times. Afternoon fine spells in southern Canterbury and inland Marlborough.
For the remainder of the South Island: Fine, apart from areas of cloud or fog morning and night.
Chatham Islands: Low cloud with drizzle at times.

Sunday: North Island, rain spreading south to Taranaki to Hawkes Bay, heavy falls in the north, few showers in Wairarapa, cloud increasing elsewhere. South Island, cloudy periods in the east, with a few showers from Banks Peninsula northwards, mainly fine elsewhere, areas of morning fog inland.
Monday: North Island, rain or showers in most places, only scattered rain from Wanganui and Taihape southwards. South Island, some rain or showers from Banks Peninsula northwards in the east, a few spots of rain about Nelson, cloudy periods elsewhere, especially along the east coast.
Tuesday: North Island, rain or showers in most places, clearing from Horowhenua to Wellington. South Island, cloudy periods, with rain in the northeast clearing, late drizzle about the fiords.
Chatham Islands: Drizzle clearing on Sunday and fine breaks developing. Cloudy periods on Monday, and northeasterlies developing. Rain at times on Tuesday.
