URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Wairarapa, Wellington

HEAVY RAIN IN THE TARARUA RANGE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
A front, preceded by a band of heavy thundery rain is expected to
move up the South Island west coast today and over the lower North
Island this afternoon and evening. A Watch is in effect for the West
Coast and for Mt Taranaki.
Rain is expected to become persistent and heavy in the Tararua Range
this afternoon ahead of the front and become thundery for a time this
evening. Up to 120 mm may accumulate in the highest parts of the
Range by 9pm after which time the rain should ease.
Members of the public should be aware of poor tramping conditions
during this period and that rivers and streams may rise rapidly.

FORECAST:
Rain is expected to become heavier this afternoon. In the 9 hours
from midday to 9pm today, expect 80 to 100 mm of rain with up to
120mm over higher parts. The heaviest rain is expected during the
evening with several hours where heavy thundery rain may reach
20mm/hr.

Short Range Forecast

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty: Mainly fine with One or two showers today. A period of rain spreading north tomorrow, clearing south of Auckland by midday.

Waikato to Wellington, including the central high country: Patchy rain, becoming widespread late this afternoon or evening, with some heavy thundery falls possible. Clearing south of Mt Taranaki tonight, and further north early tomorrow.

Gisborne to Wairarapa: Mostly fine. Brief rain in Wairarapa today and further north tomorrow.

Buller, Westland, including the Alps: Rain with heavy thundery falls, gradually easing to showers from the south, clearing this evening. Cloudy periods tomorrow with isolated morning showers.

Fiordland: Showers turning to rain tonight, easing tomorrow.

Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury: Scattered rain, heavier about Nelson Ranges this afternoon, clearing this evening then fine.

Otago, Southland: Scattered showers becoming confined to south coast tonight then clearing tomorrow.

Chatham Islands: Rain developing tonight, clearing tomorrow morning.

Monday: North Island, rain with heavy falls over the western areas, scattered falls in the east. South Island, rain or showers in most places, heavy falls in the east, with snow down to 1000 metres.

Tuesday: North Island, showers for most place, some heavy in the west and southern areas, gradually clearing. South Island, rain with heavy falls in the east, mainly fine elsewhere but a few showers in the south.

Chatham Islands: Showers clearing and strong to gale westerlies easing on Sunday. Rain developing on Monday and northwesterlies strengthening.
