URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury,
Otago, Buller, Wairarapa, Wellington, Westland
EX-CYCLONE LUSI CROSSES NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH THIS EVENING. HEAVY
RAIN TODAY FOR NELSON, MARLBOROUGH, BULLER, SOUTH CANTERBURY, NORTH
OTAGO AND TARARUA RANGES. SEVERE NORTHWEST GALES THIS EVENING FOR THE
MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS, WELLINGTON AND WAIRARAPA. ALSO HEAVY RAIN FOR
WESTLAND ON MONDAY
A depression - formerly Tropical Cyclone Lusi - lies west of Taranaki
this morning and should move southwards to cross Nelson and
Marlborough this evening. Wind and rain have eased in most North
Island areas. Heavy rain warnings are in place today for Nelson,
Marlborough, Buller, South Canterbury and North Otago. The heaviest
falls today will be in western parts of Nelson where a further 180mm
is expected. Rain in all these areas should ease or clear tonight.
The Tararua ranges have now been added to the rainfall warnings.
As the low crosses the upper South Island Sunday evening, northwest
gales are forecast to affect central New Zealand, and warnings are in
place for Marlborough Sounds, Wellington, and Wairarapa south of
Masterton. Gusts could reach 130km/h from Sunday evening to early
On Monday a cold front will move onto the South Island bringing heavy
rain to Fiordland and Westland. A rainfall warning for the ranges of
Westland south of Otira has now also been added
The heavy rain is likely to cause slips and surface flooding. The
severe northwest gales could make driving hazardous, lift roofs, and
bring down trees and powerlines. People are strongly advised to
exercise caution, and to stay up to date with the latest forecasts,

AREA/S AFFECTED: ALL OF NELSON
Heavy rain is expected much of the day before easing this evening. In
the 14 hours between 8am and 10pm today expect a further 120 to 180mm
rain in the ranges and 50 to 80mm on the Tasman Bay lowlands.
Rainfall rates may reach 30-40mm/hr in the ranges this afternoon.
FREEZING LEVEL: Above 3500 metres.
AREA/S AFFECTED: THE RANGES OF MARLBOROUGH, INCLUDING THE KAIKOURA
Heavy rain is expect for much of today before clearing this evening.
In the 14 hours from 8am to 10pm today expect a further 80 to 120mm
rain. Rainfall rates may reach 20 to 30mm per hour this afternoon.
FREEZING LEVEL: Above 4000 metres.
AREA/S AFFECTED: HILLS AND COASTAL RANGES OF SOUTH CANTERBURY AND
Strong northeasterlies and rain are forecast for South Canterbury and
North Otago through most of Sunday, easing and clearing by midnight.
In the 14 hours from 8am to 10pm Sunday expect a further 60 to 80mm
on the coastal hills and ranges. During this time 20 to 40mm rain is
likely on the coastal lowlands. Rainfall rates may reach 10-15mm/hr
AREA/S AFFECTED: BULLER NORTH OF WESTPORT
Rain is forecast to become heavy this morning, then ease tonight. In
the 14 hours from 10am this morning to midnight tonight expect 60 to
80mm rain about the ranges. Peak intensities of 15-25mm/hr. The
heaviest falls will be in the north around Karamea.

AREA/S AFFECTED: TARARUA RANGES
A short period of intense rain is expected for the Tararua ranges
Sunday night. In the 8 hours from 8pm Sunday to 4am Monday expect
80-120mm rain. Rainfall rates may reach 25mm/hr around midnight.
AREA/S AFFECTED: RANGES OF WESTLAND SOUTH OF OTIRA
Rain in Westland is expected to become heavy from late Monday
morning. In the 12 hours from 10am to 10pm Monday expect 100 to
150mm. Rainfall rates may reach 30mm/hr in thunderstorms during the

AREA/S AFFECTED: MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS, WELLINGTON AND WAIRARAPA SOUTH
Northwest winds are expected to rise to gale this afternoon in
exposed parts of the Marlborough Sounds, Wellington and Wairarapa
south of Masterton. From about 6pm Sunday to 4am Monday severe gales
are expected with gusts of 130 km/h.
