URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Fiordland, Westland, Canterbury,
Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough
HEAVY RAIN FOR FIORDLAND AND THE WESTLAND RANGES.
Unsettled northwesterlies and periods of rain are forecast for
Fiordland and the Westland ranges south of about Arthurs Pass. In
these areas, a further 80mm of rain is possible through to early
Thursday morning, on top of what has already fallen. People are
advised rivers and streams may rise rapidly, slips and surface
flooding is possible. Heavy rain in the Canterbury headwaters has now
eased and the warning there is lifted.
The front which brought northwest gales to central New Zealand last
night has now moved away to the north, and severe gale warnings for
inland Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa are now
lifted. Note further northwest gales are likely for inland Canterbury
today, and inland Marlborough later today, and a Watch will be
maintained in these areas for the possibility of severe gales.

to 80mm of rain on top of what has already fallen. Peak intensities
of 10 to 15mm/hr this evening.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 1600 metres.
AREA/S AFFECTED: RANGES OF WESTLAND SOUTH OF ARTHURS PASS
In the 18 hours from 9am Wednesday to 3am Thursday, expect a further
70 to 90mm of rain on top of what has already fallen. Peak
intensities of 10 to 15mm/hr Wednesday night and overnight.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 2000 metres.

Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Fine, some high cloud in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.
Waitomo to Kapiti, including the Central Plateau: Fine tonight. A few showers developing tomorrow afternoon.
Wairarapa and Wellington: Fine. Strong gusty northwesterlies.
Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury: Fine, apart from a few showers in Nelson and western Marlborough tomorrow morning.
Buller: A few showers, turning to rain for a time tomorrow morning.
Westland, Fiordland: Showers, some heavy. Thunderstorms possible overnight and tomorrow evening.
Southland and Otago: Fine, apart from showers about Foveaux Strait. A period of rain everywhere overnight with westerly gales. Showers developing in eastern Otago tomorrow evening.

Friday: North Island, showers spreading to most places, a few heavy. South Island, showers, a few with hail.
Saturday: North Island, occasional showers in the north and west, otherwise fine. South Island, showery in the west, also in the south with hail developing there and snow lowering to 500 metres. Mainly fine elsewhere.
Sunday: North Island, occasional showers in the north and west, otherwise fine. South Island, showery with hail possible, snow down to 500 metres in the south.
Chatham Islands: Cloudy periods on Friday with northwesterlies. Showery over the weekend with westerlies.
