Weather Warning

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING.
ISSUED BY MetService AT 8:33pm 25-Nov-2014
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Fiordland, Westland, Canterbury,
Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough

BURST OF HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED OVER WESTLAND, FIORDLAND AND THE
HEADWATERS OF THE CANTERBURY LAKES AND RIVERS. SEVERE NORTHWEST GALES
FOR CANTERBURY MARLBOROUGH WELLINGTON AND WAIRARAPA.
A front is expected to move rapidly eastwards across the South Island
overnight. A strong, moist northwesterly flow ahead of the front is
bringing a burst of heavy rain to Westland, the headwaters of the
Canterbury lakes and rivers, and to Fiordland. Behind the front, a
cooler west to northwest airstream should continue to bring rain the
western areas, but of lesser intensity. This evening (Tuesday)
rainfall intensities are likely to reach 20-25mm/hr in northern
Fiordland and the ranges of Westland, and up to a further 180mm of
rain could accumulate in Westland till 3am Thursday. This rain is
likely to produce surface flooding, and to cause rivers and streams
to rise rapidly.
Northwest winds are expected to reach severe gale force over exposed
parts of Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa from this
evening until early Wednesday. These winds may cause damage to roofs,
trees and powerlines, and create hazardous driving conditions,
particularly to motorcycles and high sided vehicles.
