URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Wairarapa, Wellington

A PERIOD OF RAIN IN THE TARARUA RANGE FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
A front, preceded by a band of heavy thundery rain is expected to
move up the South Island west coast on Friday and then over the lower
North Island during the evening. A Watch is in effect for the West
Coast and for Mt Taranaki. Rain is expected to become persistent in
the Tararua Range Friday afternoon ahead of the front and then become
heavy and possibly thundery for a time during the evening. Up to 120
mm may accumulate in the highest parts of the Range by midnight after
which time the rain should ease. Members of the public should be
aware of poor tramping conditions during this period and that rivers
and streams may rise rapidly.

FORECAST:
Rain during the morning is expected to set in and become heavier
Friday afternoon. In the 9 hours from 3pm to midnight Friday, expect
80 to 100 mm of rain with up to 120mm in higher parts. The heaviest
rain is expected during the evening with several hours where heavy
thundery rain may reach 20mm/hr.

Northland to Bay of Plenty: Fine and cloudy periods. Areas of morning fog.

Waikato to Wellington, including the central high country: Scattered rain becoming widespread this afternoon, with heavy thundery falls spreading north. Clearing south of Wanganui at night.

Gisborne to Wairarapa: Fine with high cloud. However, brief rain in Wairarapa this evening.

Buller to Fiordland: Rain with heavy thundery falls, easing showers from the south this morning and afternoon.

Nelson, Marlborough, and Canterbury: Scattered rain from late morning, heavier about the Alps and Nelson Ranges in the afternoon, then clearing.

Otago and Southland: Scattered rain or showers developing this morning, clearing inland late afternoon or evening.

Chatham Islands: Mostly cloudy, with rain developing in the evening.

Saturday: North Island, a few showers in the north becoming confined to Northland. Fine elsewhere. South Island, fine apart from a few showers remaining about the fiords and Stewart Island. Morning frosts inland in the east.

Sunday: North Island, mainly fine but cloud increasing from the north and west with the odd shower, evening rain about Taranaki. South Island, cloud thickening. Rain developing in the west,spreading elsewhere at night and snow lowering to 800 metres in Fiordland.

Monday: North Island, rain with heavy falls over the northern half,easing to few showers from the west. South Island, rain or showers in most places, heavy falls in the east, with snow down to 1000 metres.Becoming fine about the fiords, but with very strong southeasterlies.

Chatham Islands: Rain easing to few showers Saturday morning with strong southwesterlies. Showers and southwest gales easing Sunday. Mainly fine on Monday with northeasterlies developing.
