URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Fiordland, Westland, Buller,
Canterbury, Manawatu, Wellington, Marlborough, Wairarapa
FURTHER HEAVY RAIN FOR THE THE WEST OF THE SOUTH ISLAND, THE ALPS AND
LOWER NORTH ISLAND. NORTHWEST GALES FOR CENTRAL NEW ZEALAND.
A front over Fiordland and Southland is moving northwards during
This front is preceded heavy rain in the west of the South Island,
and also brings a burst of heavy rain to the lower North Island today
(Saturday). Heavy falls are still expected in Fiordland till around
midday, and in Westland, Buller and about the Main Divide into the
afternoon. This includes spillover into the Canterbury headwaters.
Streams and rivers are likely to remain in flood, and surface
flooding and slips are also possible.
Additionally, strong northwesterlies ahead of the front will affect
areas between Canterbury and Hawkes Bay, with severe gales expected
in some places. The strongest winds are likely to affect Wairarapa,
the hills of Wellington (including the Rimutaka Hill Road) and the
Marlborough Sounds. In these areas, gusts of 120km/h or more are
possible, which may damage trees, powerlines and can make driving

Rain is expected to ease towards midday, but a further 25 to 45mm
could accumulate till noon Saturday.

AREA/S AFFECTED: WESTLAND RANGES SOUTH OF OTIRA
Further heavy rain is forecast till early afternoon. In the 5 hours
till 2pm Saturday, expect another 40 to 60mm of rain to accumulate,
possibly up to 80mm in the mountains near the Glaciers. Peak
intensities could still reach 15 to 25mm/hr this morning.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 3000 metres.
AREA/S AFFECTED: RANGES OF BULLER
Periods of heavy rain are likely till this afternoon. In the 6 hours
till 3pm Saturday, expect a further 50 to 70mm of rain to accumulate
about the ranges. Peak intensities 15 to 25mm/hr this morning.
FREEZING LEVEL: Rising to 3200 metres tonight.

Rain, with heavy falls, is forecast to continue on the Alps till
early afternoon Saturday. In the 5 hours till 2pm Saturday, expect
another 50 to 70mm on the Divide, with 20 to 30mm spilling 10 to 15km
east of the Divide.

Heavy rain continues today. In the 9 hours till 6pm Saturday, expect
a further 50 to 80mm to accumulate. Peak intensities could reach 10
to 20mm/hr around the middle of the day.

Tuesday: North Island, cloudy periods, morning showers in the north and west, drizzle from Taranaki to Wellington later, turning to rain south of Foxton. South Island, rain developing in the west, with heavy falls, and scattered falls further east.
Wednesday: North Island, rain or showers in most places, but only a few falls in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, and clearing in the south. South Island, rain or showers in the west and far south, fine or becoming fine elsewhere.
Chatham Islands: Cloud increasing on Monday and northerlies developing. Rain or drizzle at times on Tuesday, clearing on Wednesday and northerlies turning westerly.
