URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Westland
PERIOD OF HEAVY RAIN FOR THE RANGES OF WESTLAND DURING TUESDAY AND
A moist northerly flow is expected to become established over the
South Island tomorrow (Tuesday). A front is expected to move east
over the South Island during the afternoon and evening, then become
slow moving on Wednesday. A period of heavy rain is expected about
the West Coast of the South Island with this front, with the heaviest
falls expected about the ranges of Westland south of Otira, where 100
to 140mm could accumulate through to Wednesday morning.
Although this is not an unusual amount of rain for the region, people
should be aware that moderate rain is likely to persist beyond the
warning period, with further heavy rain expected later Wednesday and
on Thursday. Rivers and streams may rise rapidly and be slow to

HEAVY RAIN WARNING
AREA/S AFFECTED: THE RANGES OF WESTLAND SOUTH OF OTIRA
Rain is expected to become heavy about the ranges Tuesday afternoon,
then ease Wednesday morning. In the 18 hours between 3pm Tuesday and
9am Wednesday expect 100 to 120mm to accumulate, with 140mm or more
possible about higher parts of the Alps. Peak intensities 15 to
20mm/hr Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning. Note, heavy rain
is expected to return late Wednesday afternoon or evening, and could
persist through much of Thursday.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 3500 metres.

Northland to Waitomo, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo: Cloudy periods and isolated showers, clearing by evening apart a few lingering in Northland.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Scattered rain clearing this morning. A few afternoon showers about inland Hawkes Bay.
Taranaki to Wellington, including Taumarunui and Taihape, also Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds: Scattered rain, turning to showers this afternoon and mainly clearing in the evening.
Remainder of Marlborough: Increasing high cloud, with a few spots of rain.
Buller, Westland and Fiordland: Rain in Buller, spreading south today and some heavy falls developing from afternoon.
Canterbury, Otago and Southland: Mainly fine at first, apart from some low cloud about the east coast this morning. Cloud thickening later with brief light rain.
Chatham Islands: Fine at first. Cloudy periods developing later.
Wednesday: North Island, cloudy periods and a few showers in the west. South Island, rain in the north and west, with possible heavy falls in the west. High cloud at times in the east.
Thursday: North Island, cloudy periods and a few showers for most regions but remaining dry in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. South Island, rain with heavy falls in the west, easing to showers from the south. A brief period of rain spreading northwards in the east.
Friday: North Island, scattered rain or showers. South Island, few showers in the south and west. Mainly fine elsewhere.
Chatham Islands: Fine spells with northerlies strengthening on Wednesday. A few showers with strong northerlies on Thursday. On Friday, rain or showers with strong northwesterlies dying out.
