URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Bay Of Plenty Rotorua, Westland,
Fiordland, Northland, Otago, Southland, Canterbury
BURST OF HEAVY RAIN FOR THE BAY OF PLENTY, ALSO FOR FIORDLAND AND
WESTLAND SOUTH OF OTIRA. SEVERE GALES FOR PARTS OF CANTERBURY, OTAGO
AND SOUTHLAND.
A low is expected to move southeast across the North Island overnight
Saturday and Sunday morning bringing a burst of heavy rain. Warning
amounts are expected in the Bay of Plenty, especially about the
ranges east of Opotiki, and watches for heavy rain remain in force
for much of the remainder of the upper North Island.
A front is expected to move northeast over the south of the South
Island overnight Saturday and Sunday morning. Heavy rain is expected
in the west with some thundery falls. Around 70 to 100mm in an 18
hour period. Northwesterlies ahead of the front are expected to rise
to severe gale in exposed parts of Southland, Otago and the
Canterbury high country overnight Saturday, easing in the south late
Sunday morning and in Canterbury by Sunday evening.

FORECAST:
Rain is expected to become heavy Saturday evening. In the 9 hours
from 9pm Saturday to 6am Sunday expect 50 to 100mm of rain with the
largest accumulations about the ranges east of Opotiki where
intensities could reach 15 to 25mm per hour at times. People in these
areas are advised to watch out for rapidly rising streams and rivers,
surface flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
AREA/S AFFECTED: FIORDLAND AND WESTLAND SOUTH OF OTIRA
FORECAST:
In the 18 hours from 9pm Saturday to 3pm Sunday expect 70 to 100 mm
of rain to accumulate. Heaviest falls of 25mm per hour likely in
thunderstorms. People in these areas are advised to watch out for
rapidly rising streams and rivers, surface flooding and hazardous
driving conditions.

especially for high sided vehicles and motorcycles and damage
unsecured structures.
AREA/S AFFECTED: EXPOSED PARTS OF THE CANTERBURY HIGH COUNTRY
FORECAST:
Northwesterlies are expected to rise to severe gale, gusting 130 km/h
in exposed places overnight Saturday, easing late Sunday afternoon.
Winds of this strength have the potential to make driving hazardous,
especially for high sided vehicles and motorcycles and damage
unsecured structures.
