The MetService is forecasting heavy rain for the eastern North Island tomorrow night.

Residents in the northern Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and eastern Bay of Plenty should expect to hunker down as a low to the north of the country deepens as it moves south.

MetService says the low should lie east of Northland midnight Saturday.

The heaviest falls are expected from eastern Bay of Plenty down to northern Hawkes Bay from Saturday night through into Sunday with 120 to 150mm is possible in the ranges.

Those in these areas need to watch out for rapidly rising water levels in streams and rivers. Also, drive to the conditions and be aware of slips and surface flooding.

Surfers and boaties need to also be careful. Coastal gale warnings are in place for Brett, Colville, the Bay of Plenty and Portland.
