Wellington children are the least likely nationwide to be smacked - if the results of the smacking referendum are anything to go by.
Preliminary results last night found 87.6 percent of those who voted ticked no to the question: "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?"
Voter turnout on the initial results was 54 percent. There were just over 1.6 million votes cast. The final result will be declared on Tuesday.
Voters in the capital electorates of Wellington Central and Rongotai, and in Auckland Central, gave the strongest yes votes, with 35.90, 29.22 and 28.84 percent respectively.
The yes vote attracted only 6.91 percent of the Waikato vote, where no won out by 92.64 percent. Hunua, a rural area in Franklin country, and Clutha-Southland both gave 92.58 percent support to the no vote.
