Erection of the controversial ‘WELLINGTON’ sign that some capital-dwellers never wanted has begun on Miramar cutting this afternoon.

The sign was commissioned by Wellington Airport, and features the last three letters being blown away by a wind gust pattern.

Originally, the airport wanted the sign to read ‘WELLYWOOD’ but public outcry forced a rethink and eventually a community vote on a number of other options.

A temporary sign reading ‘ALL BLACKS’ was erected while the Rugby World Cup was on, but was taken down last week to make way for the new sign.

Today, cranes and trucks graced the site at the northern end of the airport runway to put the 10 giant letters and wind gust motifs in place.

Watch the video to see the new sign being erected.
