Since it was first put on the streets 18 months ago, the Wellington City Council's spycar has pulled in $900,000 in fines.

It's divided the council and turned rate-payers against the city, prompting the Mayor to announce its review.

Many councillors want the spycar off the road now, and so do drivers who say they've been unfairly targeted.

The spy car is more efficient than a meter maid, so like all progress - some are against it.

Why are people against it?

Well it picks up lawbreakers who are breaking the law, and leads to fines for law breakers.

Some councilors are against it as they have personally been breaking the law and been caught or they have voters breaking the law and being caught. Either way its pro-crime or pro-criminal against the car.

Of course clocking up over $900,000 in fines doesn't mean the council has $900,000 as you will find like anything else, council fines dont get paid and colletion is a problem. No doubt like repeat drunk driving offenders there will be a group of people who are caught again and again and they dont learn from it as they aren't paying the fines anyway. These people typically are collecting welfare and as such if the fines get to court they will eventually repay something like $1 a week or something as pitiful and take more than a lifetime to repay the fines while continuing to clock up more fines.
