It's lunchtime and all over the Wellington CBD, smokers spill out of their offices for that long awaited puff.
And that's a problem for another office worker and non smoker Charlie Dickson.
She'd like to be able to stroll down Lambton Quay without having to dodge smoke.
After reading letters to the editor in the local paper, Charlie realised she wasn't alone and is now spearheading an e-petition on the council's website. She wants an outdoor smoking ban from Lambton Quay through to Courtney Place, Wellington's entire golden mile and that's got smokers worried.
But Charlie is happy to talk to golden mile smokers about her proposed ban.
Apart from the fumes, Charlie says Wellington has a serious cigarette butt problem and, despite being a smoker himself, local office worker Andrew Buckingham agrees.
So far, Charlie's petition has 341 signatures and lots of messages of support.
At the opposite end of the golden mile, and the opposite side of the argument is Courtney Place bar manager Fraser McInnes who believes smokers have a right to smoke outside.
There are no toxic fumes from cigarettes in Cable Car Lane where there is already a ban on smoking
But Councillor Celia Wade-Brown doubts the council will extend it.
Like the Upper Hutt City Council, Wellington may look at banning smoking in inner city council parks.
McInnes is questioning the motivation behind the petition.
“If people get het up about it but you've got to ask if they are reformed smokers.”
Charlie is so not a reformed smoker but she did reveal something that explained her passion for the public smoke free mission.
“My mother died of lung cancer when I was 25 we always said don't smoke in the car but that was a struggle.”
Charlie admits her petition is extreme. While she may not get her smoke-free wish, she hopes it'll at least make her walk down the golden mile a little more bearable.
