A crash on the West Coast has left one dead (file)

Police have named the 17-year-old victim of a single vehicle crash that occurred on the West Coast this morning.

The crash happened on the Kaniere-Kowhitirangi Rd, inland from Hokitika, about 1am.

According to police, the car veered off the left hand side of the road and struck a power pole, knocking the pole down.

The accident cut power to neighbouring properties and the valley.

A 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
