Wealthiness can cause pple to go fatty. If you are rich you would prefer using cars and eat junky food.

I absolutely agree David. Any 'fatties' actively trying to fix their problem have my full support and respect. However trying to just justify that its ok is just purely ridiculous!

Humans are not designed to carry such large amounts of weight around, and to have some politically correct academic try and tell us that it is ok to be fat is reckless, irresponsible, and fallacious..........This is so so so true........Doe anyone else not think so...

The medical profession has known for years the links between heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and I have seen for myself obese people developing such problems.

@CindyF: When I look around and compare people with what would have been the body image in the 1930s a lot more than 25% appear to be obese.

I couldn't agree more. I'm adopted and I've been blessed or cursed (depending on who you talk to) with skinny genes, while my family is bigger. My aunt has never been sick a day in her life. She works harder than anyone I know (including me). And she's overweight. My entire family is bigger and don't suffer from any major medical illnesses. I find it ridiculous that people have decided to pick on overweight individuals. Some people are heavier than others. It doesn't necessarily mean they are lazy or out of work or alcoholics or whatever. Let's not stereotype and lets look at facts before we jump onto our soap boxes and dictate new rules and regulations to the masses.

I am highly sceptical of the claim that 25% of NZ's population is obese. Yes, there are some overweight people around but obese? As measured by the spurious BMI perhaps. Before believing this information, take a look around next time you're at the supermarket. Do a quarter of the shoppers and staff appear obese to you?

It's really disturbing when I think back 20 years ago and compare it to now with the amount of heavier people around. It is a real epidemic and could become a pandemic! Just think how many countries there are in the world and we are number 3. WOW, the health system will become overwealmed in the future with the due care of the aging population, but unnecessarily with obese people.
