The Green Party is unhappy that senior government ministers and their staff continue to accept generous corporate hospitality from Westpac Bank at a time when the Government’s master banking contract, held by Westpac, is under review.

Green Party co-leader Russel Norman says the Government needs to reconsider the way they regularly accept gifts from large corporates.

“These gifts aren’t neutral,” Dr Norman says, “they buy access to decision makers in an unfair way”.

A series of Green Party written questions revealed nine ministers have accepted corporate hospitality from Westpac Bank in the last year.

Gifts included box seats at the Rugby Sevens, dinner at the White House restaurant, and tickets to rock concerts.

Thirteen ministers had staff who had accepted similar hospitality from Westpac.

Dr Norman says that as the Government is “actively considering retendering part, if not all, of the banking master contract” currently held by Westpac, accepting personal gifts creates a potential conflict of interest.

“The fact that so many ministers had staff who also accepted Westpac’s largesse is disquieting, given the central role of ministerial staff in influencing the decisions of their busy Ministers.”

He also says it’s bad for the public perception of Government ministers.

“Most New Zealanders can’t afford this kind of access, and hence it corrodes the public’s belief that we are all equal in the eyes of the Government.”

In the private sector most companies code of conduct mean it is dismissable acepting personal gifts from suppliers or customers. Anything offered or gifted on nominal value (Box of chocolates is shared. At corporate level (Corporate box seats) they are usually rotated so everyone gets a chance. But then there is parliament where there seems to be "diplomatic" immunity from everything.

@Brad..Normally i would agree with your statements except this time the parties in question are in the middle of a renegotiation of the banking contract. It would be normal govt (not business..GOVT) practice to avoid any likelyhood of the motives for accepting these freebee's being questioned.

Kim, there is a good reason this isnt news and that's because there is nothing to report. This is a clear case of gutter, muck raking politics from the Greens. The MP's in question have made no secret of going along to footie games or concerts - there is no allegation of corruption or anything sinister here.

In addition, the value of these "gifts" are below the $500 pecuniary interest so there is no need to declare them. This is in the public domain and no one has an issue with this. Finally, all MP's from across all political parties get offered and accept "freebies". We can expect to see Labour and National (and Green for that matter) MP's rocking up to RWC matches and you can be sure they wont be paying for the ticket. Big deal.

Being a MP is a crappy enough job as it is and so the odd game of footie is hardly a game breaker - in fact on the radio last night Norman himself accepted that he wouldnt stop his own MP's accepting gifts. Perhaps Norman should look at key environmental issues rather than manufacture issues from the gutter.

It is sinister, its the same thing as they do over in America, Corporations dont give out special treatment for no reason at all, its a calculated attempt to win favor/make someone feel they owe them something. Regardless of who is calling them out be it the green party or Act such a thing should not be allowed.

The Green Party has never been in government; they were always shut out by Labour & the likes of Peter Dunne & Winston Peters. Why? Because the Greens have principles and stand up for what they believe in, not selling out for a chance at the baubles of office. People need to get over their ingrained prejudices against the Green Party; this self-interested National/Labour false dichotomy is going to see us to the sewer.
