The stop-start summer is set to stop again as heavy rain and gales are forecast to hit parts of the country.

Fiordland is expected to be worst hit with between 200-300mm of rain anticipated tomorrow morning as well as northwesterly gales gusting up to 140kmh.

Southern Westland can also expect rainfalls of between 100-250mm according to the MetService.

Spokesman Daniel Corbett warns slips and surface flooding are likely, and rivers and streams will rise rapidly.

The high winds are also set to batter Southland, Otago and Canterbury before moving up the country to Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa before abating on Wednesday afternoon.
