A planned 40-minute fireworks display went horribly wrong in Whakatane last night, as thousands of dollars' worth of pyrotechnics lit up at once.

The entire display lasted barely more than a minute, filling the night sky with a spectacular - if disorganised -  array of colours.

Watch uncut footage of the display. Note - there is no sound on the clip.

Guy Fawkes Day - the real cost

The birds and little animals, nesting, sleeping, kind and good,
terrified and burned alive
by the sheer stupidity of humans.
A little war with collateral damage,
that's what they call the maiming and deaths of the innocents.
All that for our profit and entertainment,
as all wars are.
