Cameron Slate is facing numerous suppression breach charges

By Angela Beswick

An Auckland businessman fighting to keep his name under wraps may be fighting an uphill battle after being identified by prominent blogger Whaleoil.

Whaleoil, real name Cameron Slater, was in Auckland District Court on Tuesday facing another four charges of breaching court-imposed suppression orders.

The man, who owns a restaurant in Auckland, appeared before the court to face three charges laid by the Serious Fraud Office that he obtained money by deception in relation to a $3 million fraud.

Slater subsequently identified the man on his blog. He currently faces nine suppression-related charges.

He says he will continue to publish names on his blog which he says were "interesting" and expects more charges to follow.

"If I am guilty of those then Telecom is guilty of publishing the White Pages," he said of the most recent charges, which he claims have "no merit".

Each carry a maximum penalty of a $1000 fine.

The man's name has been published before, and a continued suppression order was opposed by the New Zealand Herald. His lawyer told Judge Christopher Field that defamation had already occurred.

The man has been remanded until April 13 for the suppression argument to continue.

Slater has been remanded until August for a defended hearing.

He says his defence would be based on freedom of speech issues and the need for openness in a democracy.

Why should this guy have name suppression? I believe everyone should be allowed discression until found guilty then it should be a free for all. There are some exceptions to this but not for fraud.

he obviously has not idea that freedom of speech does not give him the ability to break legal court orders. He only cares about the publicity for his bad website. Perhaps it is time tv3 did some stories on how aggressive and abusive this man is, and how he has carried out some of the most disgusting personal attacks on females on the internet. He is a looser. He has not care for victims because he has exposed names of people whose suppression was put in to protect the victims. And yet he has never leaked the names of poor people convicted of downloading child porn. Time the courts took away his access to the internet, his computers,, and deal with him.

anyone sick of this dude yet? a potential $9,000 fine for acting like a smug, self-righteous prat seems almost too light.

worst of all is the hypocrisy. the losers who hurt kids because they believe the kids "want" it often use exactly the same justification as this douche. i.e. "I believe that this is right. the law is wrong."

I wonder how many of them have used slater's "no merit" chant as an attempted (and b/s) defence?
