It is a shame that the human psyche drives us to interfere with this natural process of whale stranding. We are imposing human values on their lives and deaths. While this species is not endangered, there are far fewer of them today than 20 years ago. Some of the refloating funds might be better used studying the marine environment to find out why the numbers are in decline. The stranding deaths are by no means sufficient to contribute to the decline in pilot whales. The population studies may not show a recent decline but the numbers seen by sea goers is certainly down. There is a discrepancy somewhere.
