A heated public meeting has been held in Whanganui, protesting against the decision to release the “Beast of Blenheim”, Stewart Murray Wilson, to the outskirts of the city at the end of the month.
Stewart Murray Wilson, 65, was jailed for 21 years in 1996 for sexual and violent crimes that took place over a 25-year period.
“We have a message for the Government: if you want to look after Stewart Murray Wilson, you look after him in your backyard,” says councillor Michael Laws.
The anger was palpable, as more than 200 Whanganui residents attended a public meeting to express their disgust at high-risk sex offender Stewart Murray Wilson being released into their community.
The serial sex offender will live on prison property in Whanganui when he is released from prison this month.
The list of horrific crimes include rape, assault, bestiality and the ill-treatment of children.
He has only served 18 years of his sentence and has been assessed as having a high-rate of re-offending.
Mr Laws says he's not a defeatist, an appeaser or an apologist for bad decisions. He wants a mandate from the people of Whanganui to fight the decision.
One resident says he's disgusted the mayor is allowing scum to come to their town.
Mayor Annette Main wasn't at the meeting to respond to that comment, but Michael Laws and six other councillors were there.
“He is Corrections’ gift to Whanganui,” says Mr Laws.
Parole for Wilson is due to begin at the end of this month. There are 17 strict conditions, including GPS monitoring.
While Wilson's lawyer is challenging the conditions, residents are challenging the release itself.
Councillor Jack Bullock believes Wilson's life will be under threat.
“Plenty of people want to kill him,” he says.
Councillor Ray Stevens says this is “stage one” from Corrections, and soon Whanganui will be filled with homes for sexual perverts.
Mr Laws is confident there are plenty of options to challenge the decision, from political influence, to a possible judicial review and even slowing the consent process Corrections requires to house Wilson.
One councillor says the council doesn't condone vigilantism; they just don't want Wilson in their town.
The council will hold an urgent meeting this week.

He was a mental patient who lived his earlier life in mental institutions such as Cherry farm. His records would probably show that his offending would occur. We closed those institutions and placed many who would not cope (or would offend) in the community. Some of our mentally ill now fill our prisons - an institution that does not created for that sector. Yes, his behaviour is disgusting. Yes he should be safely away from his temptations. Who was it decided to allow serious mentally ill into the community (to eventually offend [here on a large scale]).

Surely if he is at such high risk of re-offending they should keep him imprisoned. Instead the Government will have to spend thousands on keeping him in housing when most probably people will be taking action themselves and assaulting him in Whanganui. He should be sent overseas or something of that sort.

That’s right Gary, as for the child that was severally beaten and raped continually through his entire child hood, was always in trouble for running away from the boys home which was to escape the rapes and beatings and in return he was punished as he was punished by his adopted family for the same reasons, after the boys home he went to youth corrective training prison and then the next stop was an adult prison, when out of prison he had two years of his entire life free and then committed murder at 23 years old and has now done 18 years or 8 years past his parole releases date in jail.
Even though a model prisoner staying clean from drugs and any mischief the entire time in jail accomplishing every rehabilitation course possible, deeply remorseful for his crime and a born again baptized Christian at the early stage of his sentence, his adopted family say he will never change and are trying to keep him in jail for ever thinking he has no real family or any one in his life for a defense, also stating he had a loving and kind up bringing on a TV one documentary 18 years ago and since then to the media over the many years with the same lies, also they befriended and ganged up with a lynch mob trust that’s wants life, means life and no parole or forgiveness. .
When first entered prison has was diagnosed for extreme Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder relating direct to his child hood abuse, how ever after 10 years of prison his adopted family found out he was getting ACC counseling for his child hood trauma and complained to the media that prisoners should not get such treatment with the endorsement of the trust they joined.
This is when I found out after returning from overseas and when I came forward with evidence and witnesses but no one will do anything and still ongoing this lynch mob trust propagandizing his circumstances and covering up the rapes for his adopted family to save face.
The worst part is the rapist are still free to rape more children.

That is the bigger picture Denis where NZers do not want to look. This is the whole point of how we prevent this we need to understand and look at the whole story not just wait until these boys grow explode with rage and violence onto the public then we just want to throw them in jail and punish them even more. People are not born rapist or murderers it is their circumstances and upbringing that shapes them and forms their character. When something hits the media we all jump up and down about it, talk a lot but do nothing. The only way you can stop this is to fully understand the reasons behind it. The public just think that if we throw these people in jail the problem will go away or solve itself. Jail does not work it is just to appease the masses so they feel safe and justified. If we are serious about improving society we need to look at this from a totally different point of view. The only time we do that is for crimes of passion where someone kills due to being cheated on and reacts in the heat of the moment. Why? Because we know that their thoughts and brains are not working as normal. But surly this is the case for all crimes?

Who is the beast of NZ?
This guy’s crime is pittance to the crime of rapes that I know of and have been trying to tell people for years alongside giving evidence and affidavits from witnesses.
A child at the age of one week old was adopted into an over crowded low income family of 12 children which the father of this family did not want this child from the very start but his wife insisted.
He was abused from the beginning and at the age of 5 years old was told his birth mother was gang raped and he was the birth result.
At six years old he had his first brutal rape alongside another older adopted boy in that family and then he was regular raped by that much older adopted boy throughout his entire child hood.
He was severely beaten and mentally tortured daily by the adopted father.
At 10 years old he was placed into an unwanted boy’s home where he was beaten and gang raped on the first night by older boys and then again regular submitted to rape in that boys home to avoid the beatings beforehand.
He did visit his adopted family between boy’s homes and was again raped by the other adopted boy at any chance he could...

Surely a man who needs such continuous monitoring should be in a secure mental home. Do we have such things in New Zealand now, I wonder.

A possibility to all none reformed sexual offenders released from jail is to build small self-contained units on one of the may uninhabited islands far south of New Zealand.
This way they can be released from jail much earlier saving the tax payer $90.000 each year.
They will still need to obey the laws such as environmental laws on the island, and not damage the wild life or back to prison on the main land.
We have modern technology such as solar power, solar water heating and wind generators also internet connection for the basic sites that are easy monitored and that would allow them to watch movies, listen to music alongside with daily up keep of the world events and a cell phone for emergencies such as life and death situation.
Satellite TV monitors is easily installed to make sure no boy that cried wolf.
Let them grow cannabis alongside vegetables and give as much canned food as they can eat with the basic medication you buy from the chemist also if they want alcohol then supply them hops for the home brew.
A fishing rod and diving mask, flippers and snorkel.
If we did this to all criminals that are not wanted back in society for ever, especially by choice of the prisoner them self’s for an early release it would save millions of tax payers hard earn money and reduce the appalling types of crimes they may commit again..

@Gary. I think that sterilisation would be a positive weapon against offenders such as Beast Wilson, as long it was strictly implemented and regulated. On top of that an actual life term should be served for those who fit into the high risk or repeat offending category. As first Gary said I think the persons Mental state should be looked at also but public safety should be the first priority, which is not the case here.

@The other Gary so you think that we should just kill anyone with mental issues or anyone that does not fit your ideology? Is that not what Hitler wanted, ie his vision of the perfect race? So do you approve of Nazi ideology? The danger there is where do you draw the line, all of a sudden you may find yourself on the wrong side of it for simply being the wrong colour. I think we are much better and smarter than that but lack the compassion to understand and improve it.

They should bring back Capital punishment for our most dangerous criminals. And all recidivists and gang members should never be allowed to breed. I'm sure if there was a national poll it would indicate a majority support for it.
