Whangarei bar and restaurant owners are furious the local council has voted to impose tougher rules on licensed bars and restaurants.
They will have to close by 3am, and anyone who leaves after 1am can't re-enter.
The new rules won't be in place until the end of next year, but that was of little comfort to protestors today.
It was a noisy demonstration against new liquor laws that the protestors say are unworkable.
The bar owners and hospitality workers say the council virtually passed the law a week ago and simply verified it today.
But the most unpopular part of the vote was the endorsement of a ban to preventing entry into bars after 1am.
The meeting left the protestors frustrated and angry, with one of them threatening a culinary boycott.
