At first glance, the home of the future doesn't look that different from the home of the present.

There are tables, chairs, a kitchen and a study.

But look a little closer and things are not as they seem.

There is an energy efficient gas hobb. It's energy efficient by allowing all the hot air to be trapped and retained in the oven.

But while the high tech gadgets are impressive it's their fibre optic connection to the outside world which really makes this house different.

In the kitchen you would be able to watch TV, record a cooking show and take a phone call from the same screen.

It also means a much greater control of appliances and even electricity generation.

For those wanting to work from home fibre optics would be revolutionary and the 100 megabits a second download speed is just the beginning the true top speed is much much faster.

Each strand of optical fibre can actually deliver 1.6 million megabits per second, a speed so fast that anything would be instantaneous.

MacKenzie says countries that have embraced fibre optics are already seeing the benefits.

Vector has already laid more than a 1000 kilometres of fibre optic cable across the North Island.

But when will that beefed up internet reach our living rooms?  It could be up to a decade.
