This is a hectic time for our surf lifesavers patrolling our beaches, and it can be a busy time for the media too.

Summer is a time when we report on the number of drownings in this country.

Rips claim a number of lives each year, and we decided that rather than reporting on the number of drownings, we'd also tell you what to do in a rip.

Adrien Taylor drew the short straw, so Firstline sent him to Piha and told him to get in the water.

And back in the studio, Rachel Smalley talks to Surf Life Saving's Jason Harvey about other ways in which the public can stay safe in the water.
