After a nationwide tour, independent MP Hone Harawira will launch his new political party this weekend.

Called the Mana Party, it will be an alternative to the Maori Party, which Harawira says is “completely out of touch”.

But will its creation fracture the Maori vote and make it harder to solve many of the issues that Maori have been fighting so long and hard for?

Senior lecturer at AUT University Ella Henry talks to Firstline about what a second Maori party means for Maori.

@Mouthguard I agree - this money should instead be given in billion-dollar bailouts to rich White businesses. Oh hang on - it is. But you don't hear anyone moaning about it. Actually, it didn't raise any problems at all. You would rather focus on the pittance for democracy than billions socialising costs and privatising profits.

Why is it that Hone's supporters don't seem to be able to string a coherent sentence together?

I listened to Hone on the radio recently telling the nation what a good bloke he was because he usually hitch-hikes places so he can meet Kiwis. I guess this is alright, as long as his daughter doesn't meet any pakeha boys. BUT now we find that Hone has spent more of our money on travel that ANYONE else in parliament. More than even Labour leader Phil. This is surely just evidence that Hone doesn't care about taxpayers money, he is ENTITLED after all. Shame on you Hone, what a waste of money that could have gone to hospitals, refuges, or preventing kids being beaten, whether or not they are brown. I guess it is all about Hone after all; enjoy the in-flight entertainment mate.
