The Ministry of Education has proposed closing or merging more than 30 schools

On Monday the Minister of Education will announce how many schools throughout Canterbury will close their doors.

The ministry has proposed closing or merging more than 30 schools, and schools were given two months to plead their case.

Two months. That's not long when you're fighting for your existence.

But they’ve done it.

So was the consultation worthwhile? Will it work? And do schools think the ministry will listen?

I have a feeling that the government never intended to close all those schools. I think they increased the actual number so that when they made announcements today, they would appear they had listened to the people, (which is no small part of the ministers "heart felt" speech today)

How dare she refer to them in this manner when in fact they are our children, our future and learners that deserve the best opportunity available to be the best they can.Obviously she chooses to refer to them in this manner because she is over it. I would of at least thought that without too much effort, Lady Gardiner may have had the consideration to at least made one referral to our children as Akonga

It was always known that because of population leaving Christchurch or moving within Christchurch that some schools would be closed or merged. All the complaints you are now seeing from teachers seem to be because someone else's school wasn't enclosed instead

They need to stop complaining! They complain about funding for schools yet they want schools that are badly affect by the earthquake to stay open. Invercargills gone through mergings and you didnt hear us making such a debarcle about it. It is not the end of the world, its an oppotuinity for the students to make new friends and have new experiences. Think about the benefits not the negatives and it will look alot better for everyone. I was in year 4 when the schools were annoced to move and are now in year 13. It hasnt affected me negatively but in a better way than expected

Of course the closed school's land will be sold for housing. That was always the idea. The non-tax paying Ngai Tahu Iwi will be offered it first (this is some kind of government requirement) and they will make a huge profit from it, without paying any tax.

WHY is there such a rush on closing and merging Schools in CHCH? Why isn`t the decisions being left till after the Censors on the 8 March 2013 are collected and colated. Surely this would be logical and would make sense with the hugh shifts in population in many ares since the Eathquakes, especially to the West.
