V8 Supercars championship leader Jamie Whincup will start Saturday's 300km race on the Gold Coast from pole position.
Whincup, who is partnering with France's Sebastien Bourdais for this weekend, took pole position with a fastest lap of one minute and 11.8730 seconds on the 2.96km Surfers Paradise street circuit.
"Rapt to be on pole," Whincup said before suggesting Bourdais will be behind the wheel at the start of the afternoon's race.
"Happy to have the car up the front there for Seb."
The Holden ace will be joined on the front-row by championship rival and Ford driver Will Davison, who qualified for the shootout second fastest but wasn't able to eclipse Whincup in the top 10 run for pole.
Holden pair Rick Kelly and Michael Caruso will start third and fourth with surprise package Jonathan Webb qualifying fifth-fastest.
Ford championship contender Mark Winterbottom was left frustrated after radio interference distracted him on his flying lap in the shootout, the former winner at Surfers Paradise dropping down to a starting position of sixth after the shootout.
Another championship contender, Whincup's teammate and closest rival Craig Lowndes, missed the shootout and will have to start from 13th position.
Holden's Garth Tander, another former winner at Surfers, will start from a lowly 24th after his qualifying was ended early following a collision with David Wall's Commodore in this morning's all-in 30-minute session.
Saturday's race begins at 1.40pm AEST.
