Whoopi Goldberg is urging Alec Baldwin to rethink his plans to quit acting in 2012, revealing she regrets retiring from the movie business.

Baldwin recently announced his plans to turn his back on Hollywood when his contract on sitcom 30 Rock expires, insisting his film career is nothing to be desired.

He told Men's Journal magazine, "I don't have any interest in acting anymore. Movies are part of my past. It's been 30 years. I'm not young, but I have time to do something else.

"It's a difficult thing to say, but I believe it: I consider my entire movie career a complete failure. I'll tell you why. The goal of moviemaking is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that."

But Oscar winner Goldberg, who quit acting to host US talk show The View, insists Baldwin is being too harsh on himself when he calls his movie career a "failure".

She says, "I find it extraordinary that he feels he's a failure because he hasn't driven a film. There are tons of great actors out there who haven't had the billion dollar box office hit... I know what he's saying when he says he hasn't done it (had a commercially successful film) yet, but he's such a good actor."

And Goldberg warns Baldwin retiring from acting could be a big mistake: "Having quit acting myself, I don't know if it's such a good idea."
