Why do people play rugby?

Judging by the huge crowds at almost all the World Cup matches so far, New Zealanders still love watching a good game of rugby - they also love playing it.
The latest Rugby Union figures show that more than 140,000 Kiwis play the game, almost 30,000 of whom are adults.
So what is it about rugby that makes grown men and women put their bodies on the line to play a game most of us left behind years ago?
